Sony Announces Ambitious PlayStation 3 Online Plans
At a press conference kicking of the 2006 Tokyo Game Show, Sony has announced its online plans for its upcoming next-gen PlayStation 3 console, including a Global Mapping System, personalized shopping, and the announcement of an open network for users.
European game news and review site Eurogamer has reported that Sony Computer Entertainment President and CEO Ken Kutagari has confirmed an online-enabled PlayStation 3 feature known as Global Mapping System, which allows users from around the globe to upload local content and streamline both environment rendering and game development in general.
Details thus far are sparse, but Kutagari's speech paints the picture of a game development future where developers will no longer have to travel to study real-world environments; instead, data will exist in a hypothetical virtual network, for the taking.
An example was made of Sony's Gran Turismo series. The development of the games in the series so far, said Kutagari, involved scouting out real-world locations, an expensive venture for sure. Sony's vision of a Global Mapping System, he claims, would eliminate the need for such expenses.
