Xbox Live hacked, accounts stolen

Online gaming forums are buzzing with reports that Xbox Live accounts linked to Microsoft's Windows Live ID service are being hijacked by malicious hackers.

Kevin Finisterre, a security researcher at Digital Munition, raised the issue on the Full Disclosure mailing list over the weekend, calling attention to rumors that Microsoft's Bungie.net was the victim of a breach that exposed a portion of Xbox Live.

"Some folks are having their Microsoft points stolen and or points purchased via their stolen gamer tag," Finisterre said.

A quick search of user forums at xbox.com and other gaming sites turned up multiple messages from Xbox Live users complaining about hijacked accounts, which typically link gamer tags to Windows Live ID (formerly .NET Passport).

I was a 'beta tester' for xbox live, and have been playing online ever since, and have purchased numerous games, consoles, game downloads etc. When I contacted Microsoft they said there was nothing they could do for me and that I would have to open a new live account and choose a new gamertag. All i heard was sorry he will be hearing from the supervisor in 10 to 15 days. But still loses his points as well as credits and everything else he had. I think its crappy buisness practice myself. Got my credit card details and ran up a hefty bill.... This is absolutely shocking as this thing seems to be normal practice and Microsoft deny it happens claiming that these kids are giving out personal details thereby allowing this too happen.... (This is Bull) My son is savvy enough to know not to give out any details... Surely these guys can be caught and prosecuted as he brags about it all over the web and is well known, there are even pictures of him and youtube footage.....
