Sonic Solutions, a maker of digital media software, on Monday said that Nintendo, the Japanese electronics firm, has selected it to provide DVD playback technology for use within an upcoming version of its Wii next-generation game console.
Sonic says the version of Wii that will support DVD playback will be available in the second half of 2007.
Nintendo has confirmed that there are plans to launch a new version of the Wii featuring DVD playback functionality in Japan, but no plans to release the same model in Europe or US.
The Wii's original spec sheet said the console would come with a DVD player as standard, but Nintendo later elected not to include the feature - observing standalone players are now widely available at low cost.
However, an article in the latest issue of Edge magazine states that an "enhanced" Wii with DVD function is due out in Japan some time next year.
