It looks like many of the issues with PS2 games are fixed, and that's great news to people who want to get rid of their old systems when they move to a PS3. Final Fantasy X-2 looks great, no jaggies or artifacts. Resident Evil 4 looks just as good as I remember. This is a big deal, and a large problem with the PS3 has disappeared.
The Playstation Store seems to be more responsive, it doesn't feel as sluggish as I move from item to item; pages also seem to load faster. It makes the process a lot zippier.

The update apparently irons out old TVs with 1080i. But this only works if you're playing a game that supports both 720p and 1080i. Early reports say that the PS3 still can't upscale a game from 720p to 1080i.

A number of reports have been circulating on the Internet recently, suggesting that Sony's new PlayStation 3 has encountered problems displaying high-definition visuals on HDTV sets that do not support 720p.

There’s one major upside to having selling an expensive piece of electronics with an upgradeable firmware; you can fix all the little nagging issues you find after sending the specs to manufacturing without having to recall every little machine. That seems to be the case with Sony’s PlayStation 3; anyone lucky enough to get a console on launch day will be told to update to version 1.10, which will update the system to allow full use of the PlayStation Network. According to long-standing online Nintendo leak sources, the Wii will ship with a system updater disc when it goes on sale in the coming months. The content of the disc - referred to internally at Nintendo as Wii Start-Up Disc - is unknown, though it is speculated that a firmware update is required for the first batch of Wii hardware already waiting to go on sale.
