Online play has become one of the most essential features in this generation of gaming. With so many multiplayer-oriented games coming out for the Wii, you have to wonder why Nintendo has been so hesitant in jumping on the online bandwagon. Suprisingly enough, it's actually starting to look like they're ready to bring the heat.

In a recent interview with The Mercury News, Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime discussed the future of Wii online play. He said online development kits have been seeded and titles are coming.

Hot on the heels of the recent Firefly MMO announcement, it appears there's a Battlestar Galactica Online in the works.

While little information has been revealed (other than a listing by EB Games/Gamestop and a subsequent confirmation by Vivendi Games to French gaming sites), it seems the game will be exclusive to the Xbox 360. By tacking the word "online" to something, one can only assume we're speaking about an MMO. But I guess it's not out of the realm of possibility that we might see a Battlestar Galactica kart racer. Microsoft employee Andre Vrignaud, who works for the Game Tech Group, claims that Sony's PlayStation network is "busted" and offers a "broken" user experience. He believes that a number of companies are trying to position themselves to become the sole provider of an online solution for the PS3.

Wii Online Gaming Is Confirmed To Be Free

Those of you who came away confused prior to reading Sony's recent console comparison chart which stated that the Nintendo Wii online functionality will only be free for six months, can now breath a deep sigh of relief.

Gaming publication Total Video Games contacted a representative of Nintendo UK to clear this confounding matter up, in return a spokesperson for the company confirmed that the Wii will indeed be free to play online from the off.
