Sony's PSP was the best-selling portable game console in 2005, but the Nintendo DS has turned the tables this year: According to market research firm In-Stat, the Nintendo may ship 25 to 30% more devices than Sony.

In an interview with the Japanese magazine NikkeiBP, Izumi Kawanishi, the head of platform development at Sony Japan, has announced that a new game download service for the PlayStation Portable will be released in November. The service will make its debut in conjunction with the worldwide launch of the PlayStation 3.

According to my newest PSM Sony is going to Re-release a redesigned PSP that will hit first in Japan as soon as March 2007.
So far it looks like Sony will.
* reached a deal with Samsung to purchase 8GB flash memory chips which will be built in according to industry reports.
* miniature hard disk drives are out
* will be streamlined and thinner and lighter
* Sony is still expected to include astill/video camera of undertermined resolution as a buit-in feature of the new PSP

Rumors suggest that Sony will release a GPS module of the PSP next month. Although nothing has been confirmed or announced by Sony, pictures of the accessory have apparently leaked on the web. The pictures show a black PSP with the GPS modue, and a pink PSP with a camera inserted, the PSP EyeToy.

Sony announced the expansion of the PS2 & PSP line-up in Europe with the introduction of a new color Pink!.
A limited edition Pink PSP Value Pack will be available from 27th October and will include a Pink PSP, with all the accessories.
The new Pink PS2 will be available from 8th November, and will have its public debut at the Games Convention in Leipzig, held from 23rd to the 27th of August.

What does that mean for the game market? People are willing to try on a game handheld that is considerably less in the graphics department but high in gameplay and innovation part. We see a paradigm shift towards gameplay as opposed to high graphics.

Anybody remember the Sega CD? Or how about the Sega 32? The Dreamcast held much more promise but it tanked too. Eventually Sega gave up on gaming hardware and decided to focus strictly on games.
Sony is starting to run out of the number of flop hardware projects they can release and maintain customer confidence. Reports are that they are having trouble defining the PSP which is sad because the PSP is a beautifully designed device. For a portable gaming machine I think it’s the best design I’ve seen to date, but it has an identity crisis...
