I am the mother of a 26 year old young man. He moved away from home at the age of 20. I have no idea if Second Life was around 6 years ago, but let me make one thing perfectly clear. Second Life should be banned from every home everywhere. It is an addiction that takes hold and takes over one's life. I had no clue what my son was doing. He is 26, does not work, gambles, and goes on the computer. That is his life.
He was diagnosed with Aspergers Disorder when he was 21. He was not living at home at the time. It seems that many people with...

Second Life users who want to chat up those cute avatars across the virtual room can soon try to lure them over with voice rather than text.
Next week, Second Life publisher Linden Lab plans to unveil a small beta trial in which, for the first time, people will have access to integrated voice chat.
The company plans to launch the beta for all users by the end of March, it said.
Many Second Life residents have been clamoring for voice since its launch in 2003. Until now, Linden Lab had been vague about if and when it would incorporate...

Anshe Chung, the Second Life real-estate magnate, who has become the poster girl of the virtual business world, got her start as an exotic masseuse, who used to run classes in virtual lovemaking.
In November, Anshe announced that she had accumulated computer-generated assets worth the equivalent of more than $US1 million (in real money), making her - according to her press release - the world's first virtual world millionaire.
The claims of the avatar's past have come to light after a series of attempts by her company, Anshe Chung...

A bunch of griefers in Second Life staged a members-only metaverse assault on "virtual real estate tycoon" Anshe Chung yesterday, during a staged SL event with CNET reporter Daniel Terdiman. A torrent of pixelated male genitals rained upon the victim, whose offline name is Ailin Graef.
"She is very popular, and some people don't like her," said CNET reporter Daniel Terdiman, whose Second Life avatar,...

I love simulation games. I love online communities... But when I tried Second Life during the summer of 2006, I didn't get that.
I just found a game with no direction and it was difficult to understand, too. A game like The Sims 2 is complex but it starts you off with some tutorials and premade characters and situations.
It would also seem that, in order to really have fun in Second Life, you need to spend money. I can have fun for free on Gaia Online and Neopets! Come on now! Sure you can do stuff for free on Second Life, but when it...

"The action is intended to reach out for young people, and ask for help for abandoned and abused children in developing countries in South America and Africa," says Ana de la Calle, a communications representative of the organization.
"We think Second Life and other forms of new technologies can be a great way to connect with young people and make them a little more conscious about the huge population in the real world needing help, and it doesn't cost much to guarantee the future of another human being", says Salvador Dinez, art director...

In just 32 months, Chinese language teacher Ailin Graef has transformed an outlay of $US9.95 into virtual assets worth at least $US1 million in real money.
Originally from China, Ailin Graef moved to Germany with her husband, Guntram Graef, in the mid-1990s where she took up a job teaching Chinese, English, and German.
Anshe's Second Life portfolio includes virtual property assets equivalent to 36 sq km in size. And, believe it or not, there are people willing to pay sums ranging from $US100 to $US1000-plus to own a plot of land in...

Linden Labs reported today that one of its databases containing unencrypted user information was breached two days ago.
Urgent Security Announcement
On September 6 we discovered evidence that an intruder was able to access the Second Life database through the web servers. The exploit was shut down on the afternoon of September 6 when we discovered it.
Detailed investigation over the last two days confirmed that some of the unencrypted customer information stored in the database was compromised, potentially including Second Life account...

Linden Labs, creators of the online community Second Life, have generated an outcry with the recent notice they are closing their online forums, stating that they are unmanageable. Many claim that the closure is an attempt to silence criticism. Once known for its strong community, is Linden Labs recent push for growth coming at its expense?
"We’ve decided to focus Linden energy on building out the Linden unified blog and planning for other www.secondlife.com and in-world communication options. Ultimately we want to see a richly supported...
